Eligibility Requirements

To qualify for a UK Student Visa from Pakistan, you must satisfy all of the following conditions:

RequirementWhat You Need to Prove
University Offer & CASAn unconditional offer from a UKVI-licensed university and a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) letter containing a unique reference number. Without a valid CAS, you cannot apply.
English ProficiencyIELTS Academic 6.0–6.5 (or equivalent PTE 58–65 / TOEFL iBT 80–90). Some universities accept a Medium of Instruction (MOI) certificate. Always confirm with your institution.
Financial EvidenceProof that you can cover your first year of tuition fees plus 9 months of living costs. Funds must be held for 28 consecutive days before applying. Full details in the Financial Requirements section.
TB Test CertificateA clear tuberculosis (TB) test from a UKVI-approved clinic in Pakistan. Mandatory for all Pakistani applicants. Valid for 6 months.
Valid PassportA Pakistani passport with sufficient validity to cover your full study duration, plus blank pages for visa stamping.
Genuine Student IntentYour application must demonstrate a genuine intention to study, not to work or settle. UKVI may ask additional questions at the visa appointment or upon UK entry.
No Immigration ViolationsNo history of overstaying, working illegally, or being deported from the UK or other countries.
Pakistan's Visa Refusal Rate — Know the Risk
Pakistan historically has one of the higher UK visa refusal rates among international applicants. A strong, well-documented application is essential. The most common reasons for refusal are insufficient financial evidence, inconsistent documents, and weak personal statements. These are all preventable with proper preparation.

💡 Visa Fee is Only a Small Part of the Total Cost
The £558 application fee is the smallest item in your total UK student visa spend. The Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) — which can reach £2,300+ for a 3-year degree — is the largest single upfront payment. Budget for both before you apply.

Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) — What Is It & How Much?

The IHS is a mandatory fee paid by all international students as part of the visa application. It grants you access to the UK's National Health Service (NHS) — the same as a permanent UK resident — for the full duration of your visa.

IHS Rate for Students — Unchanged in April 2026
The IHS rate for students was not increased in the April 2026 fee update. It remains £776 per person per year — the discounted student rate. The standard adult rate of £1,035/year applies to non-students. This reduced rate also applies to student dependants and children under 18.

IHS Cost by Course Length

Course / Visa LengthIHS Cost (Student Rate)Notes
1-year Master's (e.g. LLM, MBA)£776 – £1,164Calculated based on exact visa duration including pre-course period
2-year postgraduate program£1,552 – £1,940Paid in full upfront at time of application
3-year undergraduate degree£2,328 – £2,716Most common for Pakistani UG students
4-year integrated Master's / MEng£3,104 – £3,492Full amount due upfront
3–4 year PhD£2,328 – £3,492Varies by exact visa dates on CAS
6 months or less (short-term visa)£0IHS is not charged for visas of 6 months or less

*IHS is calculated to the day based on your CAS course start and end dates. Use the official IHS calculator at gov.uk/healthcare-immigration-application to get an exact figure before applying.

Financial Requirements — The 28-Day Rule Explained

Financial evidence is the most common reason for UK student visa refusals from Pakistan. The rules are strict, specific, and unforgiving. You must demonstrate you can cover both your tuition fees and living expenses.

For up to 9 months = £13,761 max
Plus any unpaid tuition fees
🏫 Outside London

How to Calculate Your Total Required Funds

⚠ The 28-Day Rule — The Most Misunderstood Requirement

The full required amount must remain in your bank account for 28 consecutive days without dropping below the minimum even once. The last day of this 28-day period must fall within 31 days of your visa application submission date — not your biometrics appointment.

Example: If you submit your application on 15 June 2026, your bank statements must show the required balance from 18 May to 14 June 2026 (28 days). Printing statements too early or too late — or having your balance dip for even one day — causes automatic refusal.

Acceptable Sources of Funds

AcceptedNot Accepted
Personal bank accounts (current or savings) in your own nameOverdraft facilities or credit cards
Parents' or legal guardian's accounts (with signed consent letter + relationship proof)Property, land, or physical assets
Official education loans from regulated banksPension funds or retirement accounts
Official government, British Council, or university scholarship lettersSalary slips alone (without corresponding bank statement)
Fixed deposit accounts (if they can be liquidated)Bonds, shares, or stock portfolios

Documents Checklist — What You Need to Apply

Every document must be in order before you submit. Missing or inconsistent documents are one of the top causes of refusal from Pakistan.

#DocumentDetails & Notes
1Valid PassportMust cover your full study duration. Should have blank pages for visa stamping. Name on passport must match all other documents exactly.
2CAS LetterConfirmation of Acceptance for Studies issued by your UK university. Contains your unique CAS reference number. Without this, you cannot apply.
3English Proficiency CertificateIELTS (6.0–6.5+), PTE Academic (58–65+), TOEFL iBT (80–90+), or a Medium of Instruction (MOI) letter. Must meet your university's minimum requirement.
4Bank Statements (28-day compliant)Covering the full 28-day period ending within 31 days of your application date. Must show the required funds consistently without any dip below the minimum.
5TB Test CertificateFrom a UKVI-approved clinic in Pakistan. Mandatory for all Pakistani applicants. Valid for 6 months from date of test. Book early — appointments fill quickly.
6Academic Transcripts & CertificatesMatric, intermediate, undergraduate degree transcripts, and certificates as applicable to your level of study.
7Passport-Size PhotographsMeeting UK biometric photo requirements: white background, neutral expression, face clearly visible.
8Personal Statement / Statement of PurposeExplaining why you chose this course, this university, and why you intend to return to Pakistan after your studies. Critical for demonstrating genuine student intent.
9Financial Sponsor DocumentsIf funded by parents: their bank statements (28-day compliant), birth certificates, signed consent letter, CNIC copies, and income proof (salary slips, business documents).
10Scholarship Letter (if applicable)Official letter from the scholarship authority confirming tuition, living allowance, and duration of funding. Must come from a recognised government, university, or international body.
11Biometric EnrolmentRequired at your VFS Global appointment in Pakistan. Fingerprints and photograph are taken. Book your appointment well in advance — slots fill quickly especially in Lahore and Karachi.
Critical — All Documents Must Match Your CAS
Every detail in your application — your name, date of birth, passport number, course title, and tuition fee — must match exactly what is written in your CAS letter. Any inconsistency is treated as a red flag and can cause immediate refusal.

How to Apply — Step by Step

The UK Student Visa application for Pakistani students is handled online via the UK government's official portal, with a biometrics appointment at VFS Global Pakistan.

1
Get Your Unconditional University Offer

Secure an offer from a UKVI-licensed UK university. Meet all academic and English language conditions so the offer becomes unconditional. Only then can your university issue your CAS.

2
Receive Your CAS Letter

Your UK university issues your CAS after you accept the offer and pay any required deposit. The CAS contains your unique reference number — this is the single most important document in your application.

3
Book & Complete Your TB Test

Book a TB test at a UKVI-approved clinic in Pakistan as early as possible — appointments are limited. Get a clear certificate and ensure it remains valid (6 months) when you submit your visa application.

4
Prepare Your Financial Evidence (28-Day Window)

Identify your required fund amount (tuition + living costs). Ensure the full amount is in your bank account for 28 consecutive days. Plan your application date so the 28-day period ends within 31 days of submission. This is the step most Pakistani applicants get wrong.

5
Complete the Online Application

Go to gov.uk/student-visa and fill in the online form. Enter your CAS reference number, personal details, financial information, and travel history carefully. Double-check everything before payment.

6
Pay the Visa Fee + IHS

Pay the application fee (£558) and Immigration Health Surcharge (£776/year) online during the application. These must be paid together before you can book your biometrics appointment. Have your debit/credit card ready.

7
Book & Attend Your VFS Biometrics Appointment

After payment, book a VFS Global appointment in Islamabad, Lahore, or Karachi. Bring your passport, printed application confirmation, and all original supporting documents. Your fingerprints and photo will be taken at this appointment.

8
Await the Decision

UKVI processes your application from the date of your biometrics appointment. Standard processing takes 3–6 weeks. You will receive an email when a decision is made. If approved, your passport will be returned with your visa vignette.

9
Travel to the UK & Collect Your BRP

You can travel up to 1 month before your course start date. After arriving, collect your Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) — your formal ID card in the UK — from the address specified in your visa approval letter within 10 days of arrival.

Processing Time & Application Timeline

Here is a recommended timeline to ensure your visa arrives in time for your course start date:

6+ Months Before
Secure University Offer & Begin English Test Prep
Apply to universities, take your IELTS/TOEFL, and satisfy all offer conditions. This gives you maximum time to address any issues.
4–5 Months Before
Receive Unconditional Offer & Request CAS
Pay your university deposit and request your CAS. Note: your university can only issue a CAS within 6 months of your course start date, and no earlier than 3 months before you intend to travel.
3–4 Months Before
Complete TB Test & Prepare Financial Documents
Book your TB test (allow 2–3 weeks for results). Begin the 28-day bank balance period. Assemble all supporting documents.
2–3 Months Before
Submit Online Application & Book VFS Appointment
Complete the online form, pay the visa fee and IHS, and book your VFS biometrics slot. VFS slots fill quickly — do not delay.
6–8 Weeks Before
Attend VFS Biometrics Appointment
Attend your appointment with all original documents. Processing officially begins from this date.
3–6 Weeks After Biometrics
Receive Decision & Collect Passport
Standard processing takes 3–6 weeks. You can travel up to 1 month before your course start date once your visa is issued.
Apply No Earlier Than 6 Months Before Your Course
UKVI will not process a Student Visa application made more than 6 months before your course start date. Apply within this window — but also not too close to your start date. Targeting submission 8–10 weeks before travel is the recommended safe zone.

Work Rights During Your Studies

Pakistani students on a UK Student Visa are permitted to work — within defined limits. Exceeding these limits is a serious immigration violation that can affect your future visa applications.

SituationWork Hours Allowed
During term time — degree-level courses at universities20 hours per week (strictly enforced)
During official university holidays / vacationsFull-time (no hour restriction)
Below degree-level courses (e.g. foundation, pre-sessional)10 hours per week during term time
Self-employment / running a businessNot Permitted on a student visa
Working as a professional sportsperson or entertainerNot Permitted
Volunteering / unpaid internshipGenerally permitted — confirm with your university

Graduate Route Visa — Post-Study Work in the UK

One of the biggest reasons Pakistani students choose the UK is the Graduate Route — a post-study work visa that lets you live and work anywhere in the UK after graduation without needing a job offer first.

QualificationGraduate Route DurationNotes
Bachelor's degree2 yearsFrom January 2027, reduces to 18 months for new applications
Master's degree (all types)2 yearsFrom January 2027, reduces to 18 months for new applications
PhD / Doctorate3 yearsAlways 3 years — no reduction planned
⚡ Important — Graduate Route Changing from January 2027
From 1 January 2027, the Graduate Route for bachelor's and master's graduates will reduce from 2 years to 18 months for new applications. PhD graduates will still receive 3 years. What matters is when you apply for the Graduate Route — not when you start or finish your degree. If you complete your degree before January 2027, apply before that date to secure the full 2 years.

After the Graduate Route — Pathway to Skilled Worker Visa

Most graduates use the Graduate Route to find a UK employer who can sponsor them on a Skilled Worker Visa — the primary route toward UK Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) and eventual British citizenship. The Graduate Route gives you time to secure this sponsorship without the pressure of a ticking clock.

Can You Bring Family to the UK as a Student?

Student TypeCan Bring Spouse/Partner?Can Bring Children?
PhD / Doctoral studentYes — as a dependantYes — as a dependant
Government-sponsored studentYes — if sponsoredYes — if sponsored
Master's degree studentGenerally not permittedGenerally not permitted
Bachelor's degree studentNot permittedNot permitted
Foundation / pre-sessionalNot permittedNot permitted

Each dependant must pay their own IHS (£776/year — student rate) and visa application fee, and must demonstrate additional maintenance funds. The rules around dependants are tightly controlled — always verify current UKVI policy for your specific course level before making plans.

Most Common Reasons for UK Student Visa Refusal from Pakistan

Pakistan has one of the higher UK visa refusal rates. Here are the most common reasons — and how to avoid each one:

Refusal ReasonHow to Avoid It
28-day fund rule violatedKeep the full required amount in your account for 28 consecutive days ending within 31 days of submission. Not one day should the balance dip.
Inconsistency between documents and CASCross-check every document against your CAS letter — name, dates, fees. Everything must match perfectly.
Weak personal statement / unclear intentionsWrite a detailed, honest statement explaining your course choice, career plans, and intention to return to Pakistan after studies.
Missing or expired TB certificateBook your TB test early. Ensure the certificate is from a UKVI-approved clinic and will remain valid (6 months) at time of submission.
Unacceptable source of fundsUse only current accounts, savings accounts, or regulated bank accounts. No property, shares, or overdraft facilities.
Previous UK visa refusals not disclosedAlways declare all previous visa refusals — for any country, not just the UK. Failure to disclose is treated as deception.
Applying too early (before CAS is valid)Apply only after receiving your CAS, within 6 months of your course start date.
Lack of genuine student intentEnsure your personal statement, financial situation, and course choice all clearly point to a legitimate study purpose — not migration or work.

Expert Tips to Strengthen Your UK Visa Application

1 · Start Your TB Test and Bank Preparation at the Same Time

Both the TB test and the 28-day bank balance period take time. Start both simultaneously as soon as you receive your CAS — do not wait until one is done to start the other. Delayed preparation is the most common avoidable mistake.

2 · Write a Genuine, Detailed Personal Statement

UKVI caseworkers assess whether you are a genuine student. Your personal statement should explain your academic background, why you chose this specific course and university, your career goals, and why you intend to return to Pakistan after studying. Generic statements raise suspicion.

3 · Do Not Move Money Around Before the 28-Day Window

Large deposits into your bank account close to the application date raise red flags. The funds should appear stable and long-standing. Avoid last-minute transfers from multiple sources — it makes the money appear fabricated.

4 · Disclose All Previous Visa Refusals

If you have ever been refused a visa — for the UK or any other country — you must declare it in your application. UKVI cross-references immigration databases. Non-disclosure is treated as deception and results in a long-term ban, not just a refusal.

5 · Book VFS Appointments Early

VFS Global biometrics appointments in Islamabad, Lahore, and Karachi fill quickly — especially during peak admission seasons (July–September and January–February). Book your appointment immediately after submitting your online application and paying fees.

6 · Apply Before January 2027 for Full 2-Year Graduate Route

If you are completing a bachelor's or master's degree before January 2027, apply for the Graduate Route before 1 January 2027 to benefit from the full 2-year work permission. After that date, new applicants get only 18 months.

7 · Get Professional Guidance if Your Profile is Complex

If you have previous refusals, unconventional funding, a gap year in your academic record, or any concerns about your application, professional guidance is not a luxury — it is insurance. A single refusal can complicate all future UK visa applications.

Frequently Asked Questions

QWhat is the UK Student Visa fee for Pakistani students in 2026?
As of 8 April 2026, the UK Student Visa application fee is £558 (increased from £524). In addition, you must pay the Immigration Health Surcharge of £776 per year of your visa — paid upfront in full. For a 3-year degree, total upfront costs are the £558 application fee plus approximately £2,328–£2,716 in IHS.
QHow much money do I need in my bank account for a UK study visa?
You need to show your unpaid tuition fees plus living costs of £1,529/month (London) or £1,171/month (outside London) for up to 9 months. These funds must be in your account for 28 consecutive days ending within 31 days of your application submission date.
QIs a TB test compulsory for Pakistani students applying for a UK visa?
Yes — a tuberculosis (TB) test is mandatory for all Pakistani students applying for a UK Student Visa. It must be done at a UKVI-approved clinic in Pakistan and the certificate is valid for 6 months. Your application cannot be submitted without it.
QHow long does UK student visa processing take from Pakistan?
Standard processing takes 3–6 weeks from the date of your biometrics appointment. Priority processing (approximately £500) aims for a decision within 5 working days. Always apply well before your course start date — target submitting 8–10 weeks before you intend to travel.
QCan I work in the UK on a Student Visa?
Yes — up to 20 hours per week during term time and full-time during official university holidays. You cannot be self-employed or run a business on a Student Visa. Exceeding your work hours is a serious immigration violation.
QCan I bring my spouse to the UK as a student?
Generally not for undergraduate and master's students. Dependant visas for partners are currently permitted only for PhD/doctoral students and government-sponsored students. Rules can change — always verify current UKVI policy before making plans.
QWhat is the Graduate Route and is it still available in 2026?
Yes, the Graduate Route is still available in 2026. It allows you to stay in the UK for 2 years after completing a bachelor's or master's degree (3 years for PhD) to work or look for work — with no job offer required. From 1 January 2027, it reduces to 18 months for bachelor's and master's graduates.
QWhat IELTS score do I need for a UK student visa?
Most UK universities require an overall IELTS Academic score of 6.0–6.5, though some postgraduate programs require 6.5–7.0. Your English proficiency must meet both your university's requirement and the UKVI minimum. Confirm with your specific university before booking your IELTS test.
QCan my parents' bank account be used for financial evidence?
Yes. You can use a parent's or legal guardian's account, provided you submit 28-day compliant bank statements, a birth certificate proving your relationship, a signed consent letter from the account holder, and their CNIC or ID proof. Every document must be consistent and complete.
QWhat is a CAS and how do I get one?
A CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies) is an official document issued by your UK university after you accept an unconditional offer and pay any required deposit. It contains a unique reference number required for your visa application. Without it, you cannot apply. Your university can only issue a CAS within 6 months of your course start date.
